The story of the Phillips Championship Rodeo goes back to the beginning of the rodeo 44 years ago on the Phillips Ranch east of Resaca, GA. In 1980, Larry Phillips first exposed North Georgia to the skills, thrills, chills and dangers displayed by talented cowboys and cowgirls. Larry founded the rodeo to preserve the era of entertainment that he grew up with. Phillips had grown up in a time with Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Western shows on TV and the Saturday cowboy movies at the old Gem Theater. People his age had also commonly grown up on farms with cows, mules, horses and other animals. That era was fading from exposure to a younger generation. Larry wanted to preserve for a younger generation a flavor and heritage of the reality of life around the horses and bulls of just a few generations back. Larry Phillips died suddenly in 2001, but the rodeo story did not end. The Phillips Championship Rodeo started as a family affair and the Phillips family continues to carry on the rodeo as a part of Larry’s legacy. Larry’s son, Danny, along with his wife Bridgett and their two daughters Danielle and Sage, kept the event alive. Beginning in 2001, the rodeo was renamed the Larry Phillips Memorial Championship Rodeo. In 2008 Phillips Rodeo decided to help spread the word about breast cancer awareness with the “Tough Enough To Wear Pink” theme. The theme was inspired by Bridgett Phillips’s battle with breast cancer. Bridgett successfully fought a battle with breast cancer, undergoing surgery and treatment that required a nearly year-long stay in her native state of Oklahoma. To raise awareness for the disease and those who are affected by it, all fans are asked to wear pink to the rodeo. The goal is to “Pink-Out” the rodeo area. For those “Tough Enough To Wear Pink”
