The story of the Phillips Championship Rodeo, a celebrated event in the Bartow County rodeo scene, goes back 44 years to its inception on the Phillips Ranch east of Resaca, GA. In 1980, Larry Phillips introduced North Georgia to the skills, thrills, chills, and dangers showcased by talented cowboys and cowgirls. Larry founded this rodeo in Georgia to preserve the era of entertainment he cherished, reminiscent of his childhood with Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Western shows on TV, and Saturday cowboy movies at the old Gem Theater. Many in his generation grew up on farms surrounded by cows, mules, horses, and other animals, but that era was fading from the younger generation. Larry aimed to preserve a flavor of heritage and the reality of life around horses and bulls for them. Although Larry Phillips passed away suddenly in 2001, the Phillips rodeo legacy continues. What began as a family affair is now carried on by the Phillips family, including Larry’s son, Danny, his wife Bridgett, and their daughters Danielle and Sage. In 2001, the rodeo was renamed the Larry Phillips Memorial Championship Rodeo. In 2008, Phillips Rodeo expanded its mission by promoting breast cancer awareness with the “Tough Enough To Wear Pink” theme, inspired by Bridgett Phillips’s courageous fight against breast cancer. To raise awareness for this important cause, all fans are encouraged to wear pink to the event, aiming to “Pink-Out” the rodeo area. This commitment to community and awareness makes the Phillips Championship Rodeo a cornerstone of the Calhoun rodeo and Cartersville rodeo events in the region.
